The Hero Culture in IT (Not always a good thing)

The hero culture runs deep in most IT departments. In many places where I have worked, the staff who get the most kudos are the ones who need to pull the all-nighter to make things work, or have to be involved in everything for it to be successful.

While there is always room for people who go above and beyond the minimum to get things done, ultimately the hero mentality is a big reason why so many IT departments are stuck in a reactive mode, constantly fighting fires then slapping each other on the back for a job well done.

The real hero is the employee who through proper planning doesn’t need to do the all-nighter. Another hero is the employee who documents his/her work and makes it available to everyone (e.g. via a wiki) so they don’t need to be available for anything in their area to function.  

Instead of rewarding the hero, IT management need to examine why it was required in the first place. Were processes followed?  (sloppy change management is a big culprit here). Is adequate documentation available on the key IT systems? Was the right level of planning done? Were estimates correct? Was the outcome as expected.

The real hero can answer yes to all of these questions. The so called hero answers no, but gets rewarded because it worked out in the end. Who are your real heroes?

Human Resources vs. Company Resources

As an employee in corporate America I’ve pondered the Human Resources question numerous times: Is HR really Human Resources or Company Resources? When employees have management, co-worker or job duties problems Human Resources should be the department to address concerns. Human Resources should create a trusting atmosphere allowing to confide the details of dilemmas/issues and assist in a win /win outcome for both sides.

My dealings with Human Resources have been the exact opposite. Confidence was thrown out the window and trust a thing of the past. The “Human” factor in Human Resources has been removed, deleted and brushed aside. It is now sadly a department to protect the company and not the employee. What happened to the good old days when HR was called “Personnel”? Personnel was always personable and caring. Well, it just goes to show you how far we have come in Corporate America from being a ‘person’ working for a company to an ‘employee / resource number’ that’s disposable.

Manager Drives You Insane

Have you ever had a manager that drove you insane? A manager with not an one ounce of people skills. A micro-manager who managed to the nth degree creating a frustrating work environment, where everything you did was wrong and you hated going to work. Well I did. I had a boss that smiled in my face and was stabbing me in that back all the way to the performance review, salary increase and promotion (or so I thought). It was rough for two plus years because I didn’t know what to do. I was working hard and going nowhere and not being compensated for my efforts. I can honestly say I was to the point where quitting was my next step… but GTC “Get the Check” kept me going.
